What are veneers?

Veneers are porcelain coverings that bond to the surface of the front teeth. These stain-resistant shells can change the shape, size, and color of damaged or discolored teeth for a more attractive appearance. Since veneers require very little preparation, they’re ideal for individuals who want to enhance their smile quickly.

What can veneers treat?

Once bonded to your teeth, veneers can improve the appearance of many different cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • Small tooth chips
  • Discolored teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Overly short or long teeth
  • Worn teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Misaligned teeth

While veneers aren’t replacements for orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign®, they can give your teeth a straighter, more uniform appearance.

What is the veneers process like?

The planning and placement process for veneers typically takes two appointments. During the first visit, your dentist at Royal Dental Center prepares your teeth by removing a small portion of enamel from the surface.

Removing a small layer of enamel ensures that the veneers match the size and depth of the rest of your teeth without appearing bulky.

Next, your dentist takes digital impressions of your teeth to create your custom-made veneers. Since creating porcelain restorations can take 2-3 weeks, you must wear temporary veneers in the meantime.

When you return to Royal Dental Center, your dentist replaces your temporary restorations with permanent veneers. They apply a special adhesive to the teeth to protect and restore your smile.

How long do veneers last?

With proper care, veneers can last 10-30 years. Routine visits to Royal Dental Center, regular brushing and flossing, and avoiding overly hard or chewy foods (gummy candy, jawbreakers, etc.) can help preserve the lifespan of your veneers.

Do veneers fix dental issues?

The primary function of veneers is to cover dental concerns, not treat them. If you have a severe tooth fracture or misshapen tooth that’s affecting your bite, your dentist may recommend a dental crown over a veneer.

Crowns are tooth-shaped caps that fit tightly over the visible portion of a damaged tooth to change its shape, size, and color.
